This year’s league’s debut phase will be organized in March and April. She had retired from all formats of cricket last year, ending her 23-year career and holding the record for most runs scored in women’s international cricket.

As the team’s mentor, she will also aid in promoting women’s cricket in Gujarat and the sport at all levels. Adani Sportline spent Rs 1,289 crore on the Ahmedabad franchise, making it the most costly of the five teams in the most recent team auction.

  • Harleen Deol

High-Profile T20I Performers Chosen In WPL Auction On a Pivotal Day

The first WPL Auction was dominated by elite all-rounders and batters, with Smriti Mandhana, the top opener for India, winning the highest salary.

The third-ranked batter in the MRF Tyres ICC Women’s T20I rankings was purchased by Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 3.4 crores, and 86 additional players were also given invitations to the competition’s debut season.

The teams are arranged as follows, with players who are highly ranked in the ICC Rankings being particularly appealing to teams.

Delhi Capitals

The No. 5 ranked hitter Meg Lanning (1.1cr), who will also be a candidate to take on the team captaincy role, was the first player the Capitals signed in their initial round of signings as they followed the trend of going batter and all-rounder heavy.

After strategically acquiring South Africa’s top all-rounder Marizanne Kapp (ranked No. 18) for 1.5 million dollars, they signed 11th-ranked batter Jemimah Rodrigues to a 2.2 million dollar contract after she scored the game-winning run against Pakistan.

The 21st-ranked all-rounder Jess Jonassen was another wise late addition.

Shafali Verma, the 10th-ranked batter, was an obvious choice after India won the ICC Under-19 T20 World Cup. She is joined by another young gun, England’s Alice Capsey (75 lakh), who should round out the top four of their batting order.

Capsey, who is presently ranked 38th among batters, shot up from 53rd in the most recent update, beginning with her performance as Player of the Match in England’s victory over Ireland at the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, which took place hours after the auction.

Others included Radha Yadav (ranked 27th), Shikha Pandey (ranked 81st after missing a lot of international activity), and Poonam Yadav (now out of the international fold), who was a late pick after her name failed to sell the first time it was mentioned.

Titas Sadhu, who won the U19 T20 World Cup, was also selected, while Delhi were the only team to choose an Affiliate Player, choosing Tara Norris, an American left-arm fast.

Although being a Philadelphia native, Norris has substantial domestic experience in England and impressive rankings from The Hundred.

Gujarat Giants

Ashleigh Gardner, the top-ranked Australian player, was selected by Gujarat with a price tag of 3.2 crores, demonstrating their strategy of signing all-rounders. Gardner acknowledged having vivid dreams about the auction taking place in her sleep in the weeks leading up to the event.

Despite ending her international career, Deandra Dottin of the West Indies sold for $60,000.

Gujarat Giants – Women’s IPL Player

Harleen Deol (106th bowler), Annabel Sutherland (116th all-rounder), and Sneh Rana (48th all-rounder) are further all-rounders with international experience. Australian leg-spinner Georgia Wareham is also proficient with the bat.

Because of her consistency, second-ranked batter Beth Mooney elevates players like Sophia Dunkley (ranked 13) and Sabbineni Meghana (135th).

Mumbai Indians

Harmanpreet Kaur, the team’s leader and the 12th-ranked hitter, was the focal point of MI’s spending, being acquired for 1.8cr in the first round of players. Yastika Bhatia, a potential star and international teammate, also joined after winning a 1.5cr offer.

The third-ranked all-rounder and West Indies captain Hayley Matthews didn’t receive a bid at first but later accepted one for 40 lakh. She joined the Mumbai Indians alongside several other all-rounders.

Mumbai Indians – WPL

Nat Sciver-Brunt, the sixth-ranked all-rounder, cost the most of the group, 3.2cr, while Amelia Kerr, the fourth-ranked all-rounder, was, all things considered, a good deal at 1cr.

Pooja Vastrakar, a domestic celebrity, received 1.9 crore, while Chloe Tryon, ranked 27th, and Heather Graham, an Australian, each received 30 lakh.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Viewers may have worried at one point how RCB would put together a team that fit inside the 12cr budget after splashing the dough early on Mandhana among several winning bids.

After acquiring the left-hander, RCB added Richa Ghosh (36th batter), Ellyse Perry (10th all-rounder), Renuka Singh (12th bowler), and Renuka Singh to establish a solid core.

They made smart decisions with the remainder of their purchases and ended up with a star-studded lineup that included Megan Schutt, Heather Knight, the 32nd-ranked batter in England, and Sophie Devine, the fifth-ranked all-rounder for New Zealand (for 50L) (fifth-bowler for 40L).

After being passed over the first time her name was announced, Schutt had to wait anxiously as Dane van Niekerk, a veteran from South Africa, was able to go beyond a trying week thanks to the late entry of RCB.

UP Warriorz

Australia’s Alyssa Healy, perhaps the best wicket-keeper available and the seventh-ranked T20I hitter, was selected for a steal of 70 lakh, creating an intriguing dynamic in the selection of wicket-keepers.

The Warriorz, who were more focused on bowling than other teams, used fast Shabnim Ismail (the eighth-ranked bowler for 1cr) and tall England quick Lauren Bell to their advantage (82nd).

Despite being accompanied by fellow spinner and No. 1 T20I bowler in the world Sophie Ecclestone, Rajeshwari Gayakwad (66th) was selected for 40 lakh in a round of spinners that clubs were reluctant to select.

Together with India internationals Deepti Sharma (fourth bowler, second all-rounder), and Devika Vaidya (84th all-rounder), Tahlia McGrath (No. 1 batter, 11th all-rounder), as well as hard-hitting Grace Harris, who is still figuring out her place in the Australian team, were added to the group.
